Penelope's Pumpkin Hat

This cute pumpkin hat pattern knits up quickly in one evening.  Complete with stem and tendrils, it is the perfect punctuation to any autumnal outfit!


Materials:
approximately 84 yds of Lichen and Lace 4ply Superwash Worsted in Pumpkin 
approximately 10 yds of Lichen and Lace 4ply Superwash Worsted in Baby Leaves

5mm (size 8) 16” circular needle
5mm (size 8) set of double pointed needles

gauge: 4.5 stitches= 1”

3 sizes: baby, (toddler,  child)

Method:
1.Using the circular needle, cast on 56 (64, 72)
stitches and join in the round.
2.Knit in the round until piece measures 1”.
3.Now we will begin to purl the 1st and every 8th
stitch to create the ridges of the pumpkin:
*purl 1, knit 7, repeat from * to end of round
on this round and all subsequent rounds.
4.Continue in this manner until peice measures 5”(6”,
7”) from beginning.
5. Begin decreasing:

1st decrease round: *Work 6, Knit 2 together, repeat
from * to end, maintaining purl ridges
Next round Knit and purl as usual
2nd decrease round: *Work 5, Knit 2 together, repeat
from * to end, maintaining purl ridges
Next round Knit and purl as usual
3rd decrease round: *Work 4, Knit 2 together, repeat
from * to end, maintaining purl ridges
Next round Knit and purl as usual
4th decrease round: * Work 3, Knit 2 together, repeat
from * to end, maintaining purl ridges
Next round Knit and purl as usual
5th decrease round: *Work 2, Knit 2 together, repeat
from * to end, maintaining purl ridges
Next round Knit and purl as usual
6th decrease round: *Purl 1, Knit 2 together, repeat
from * to end, maintaining purl ridges

6.Attach green yarn.  *Knit 2 together, repeat from
*to end (no more purl stitches)
7.Repeat last row, so that you now have 4 stitches
total.
8.Work  4 stitch i-cord for 2 inches for pumpkin stem.
at end of 2 “, knit 2 together twice and then knit the
last two stitches together, so that one stitch
remains.  Cut yarn and fasten off.
9. Adding the tendrils:  the crochet method is
Preferred:

Crochet method: using a crochet hook, pick up one
stitch at base of stem with green yarn.  chain 11
stitches.  single crochet 2 times into 2nd chain from
hook.  *single crochet 2 times in next stitch, repeat
from * to end, and fasten off.  Make two tendrils in
this fashion.

Knitted method: using green yarn, pick up one stitch
at base of stem.  Using backward loop method, loosely
cast on ten stitches.  Knit through the front and
back, and then the front again of each stitch, this
increases each stitch twice, for a total of 30
stitches.  Bind off loosely purlwise, and twist tendril
around your finger to form.  Make two tendrils in this
fashion.

Weave in all ends.  You’re done!
